The Truth About Horizon Treadmills

Hopefully you haven't arrived at this article expecting a rave review of Horizon treadmills. Although the company, has been around for a long time it seems their treadmills have not kept up with the evolving fitness equipment scene. In my opinion horizon treadmills should not be considered for your home gym.

At between $700 and $1,400 some people might say that because they are a cheap treadmill you shouldn't be expecting too much. However I think if you are seriously considering setting up your own home gym then you should be expecting a treadmill that is a) going to perform and b) last longer than the time to your next birthday. Sure it's a cheap brand but you might not be saying that after you fork out for the costly repairs!

The main problem with the machines is that they are manufactured in China. Although this keeps the cost of production down it also results in less than favorable quality.

Don't let the good looks of these machines fool you. Remember if you are looking for a cheap way into the home gym scene then you must do some decent research into the brand and products themselves. Horizon treadmills look good new but they won't look so good sitting in your house collecting dust!

Don't get me wrong, there are some decent, cheap treadmills around but they are few and far between. You are much better off in the long run getting something that costs slightly more but won't breakdown at the first hint of hard work.

Advantages

As I've mentioned above, Horizons are cheap, discount treadmills. Their machines range from $700 to $1,400. At this price they will appeal to people looking for a bargain. They are good looking machines.

Disadvantages

Being made in China their quality has a lot to be desired. Their looks and low price can be deceiving to a beginner so don't be fooled.

Recommendation

I don't recommend Horizon treadmills. You are far better off saving up for a slightly more expensive but better quality treadmill that will still be working a year down the track.

Well there you have it. Hopefully this article has made you think about Horizon treadmills carefully. Always remember to do you own due diligence before buying a cheap treadmill.

What is the Best Home Rowing Machine For Me?

If you are into physical fitness and would want to have it in the comforts of your home, home rowing machines are a great way to substitute for the costly gym membership that you may not maximize at all. Types that are foldable and are economical are available in the market. Depending on your specific needs, there is sure to be a home rower for you.

Economically speaking, piston type home rowing machines are your best bet. However, it may not give you so much ease and hard-core work out if that is what you are aiming for. For beginners who would not want to stress their muscles immediately, you may have this for a good start. At $200, you can get yourself a good machine that lets you tone and lose weight at the same time.

Sensitivity to noise in the early hours of the morning may be a hassle but not with the magnetic home rowing machines. It does not produce as much noise as other types and still delivers with the kind of performance that you need. If you are looking for the closely mimicked feel of actual water, you can opt for the water resistance or air rowing machines. The rowing motions and the intensity that you need creates a work out made for athletes and gym buffs.

Extra features on these machines may cost a bit extra, but you would not want to compromise anything for your health, would you? If there is a great need to keep an eye on your progress for medical reasons, heart rate, speed, distance and other factors are available for your record.

Consult your doctor if there are other extra limitations that you have to avoid or certain requirements that you have to meet. Home rowing machines are well-equipped with the technology that is needed to keep up with the pace of medical advancements.

Understanding what it takes to keep a healthy and fit body is important in living healthy. Do not forget that you also have to take care of your machine to keep it for a longer period. Discipline and maintenance are important to ensure that you are able to optimize every session that you do whether with a gym instructor or with a home rowing machine.

Training For A Marathon On A Treadmill

I have run a half marathon, two full marathons, and even an extreme trail ultramarathon. But what separates me from most other marathon runners, is that except for a rare run outside, all my training has been on a treadmill. Most other runners I know hate the treadmill, and sometimes refer to it as the dreadmill. But the treadmill has some advantages over running outside. Of course, there are also some disadvantages as well.

One of the biggest advantages of a treadmill is the ability to run day or night regardless of the weather. Where I live, it gets brutally cold in the winter, and uncomfortably hot and humid in the summer. But with a treadmill, I am able to train year round.

Another advantage with a treadmill is the ability to run at a specific pace. Most marathon schedules call for running at various paces on various days. Outside it is near impossible to know what pace you are running while you are running. You can run on a track, and look at your watch as you pass certain markings to learn what pace you have already run. And depending on the terrain, it may difficult, if not impossible to maintain a consistant pace. But if my running schedule says run 10 miles at a 10:00 pace, I can just set the treadmill to 6mph, and run 10 miles at exactly a 10:00 minute per mile pace.

The biggest disadvantage of running on a treadmill is the monotony. Most people get bored running on a treadmill for hours. I have a TV set up in front of mine, and will watch movies, or whatever is on TV.
Another disadvantage of long distance running on a treadmill is the potential for distractions. It is too easy to go take a bathroom break, get lunch, or check email. This is one of my biggest problems. I will take breaks during long runs to take care of the distractions. As long as I run all the miles, I have generally been okay in the end. But with willpower, this problem can be overcome.

Another minor inconvenience of training on a treadmill is that you are not cooled by the passing air as your run. I solved this by placing a small fan on the floor in front of the treadmill that blows air onto me to help keep me cool.

While training on the treadmill for my first road race, a half marathon, I was nervous about whether the road would be significantly harder than running on the treadmill. I did a couple training runs out on the road to see how it would feel. I was surprised to notice little difference in the impact, and found that I actually ran faster on the road than I was expecting to.

I was also concerned about the lack of hills on a treadmill. In my earlier treadmill training, I would set the incline to 3 or 4. I had read somewhere that this would simulate the road better. But I was also not able to run as fast. So at times I would set the incline to the lowest setting, and would do faster runs. As time went on, I just left the incline on the lowest setting, and run faster. I have not found this to limit my running. Most marathons are relatively flat anyway, with only a few small hills.

I was also worried that since I was not actually propelling my body forward like I would be when actually running on the road, that running on a treadmill was actually easier than running outside. This has turned out not to be an issue. When I have run outside in races, I have actually tended to run faster and easier than I have on the treadmill.

Treadmill Exercise - Things To Know

Treadmills are the most popular and widely used fitness equipment around the world. Its easy to get on to a treadmill and do you workout but how effective it is? If you don't see or feel the results in some time you will not feel motivated enough to continue with your exercise schedule. What makes your treadmill exercise effective, it's the small things you should keep in mind while working out. The things which are small but do make a difference and are neglected by most users.

First out of them would be that most people who use the treadmills would hold the hand rails while they walk, jog or run on their machines. This is wrong as you should never hold on to hand rails when you are using your treadmill. It also does not allow you to move in your normal stride or motion. Many people also grip the front bar pulling their body forward with each step. Any kind of holding on eliminates walking and running weight-bearing benefits. Moreover it can affect your posture or you may strain your back or shoulders while doing it. Best way would be to move your arms in the natural motion of walking or running. This will give you some upper body movement as well and burn more calories.

You must walk or run in the right posture that is look straight with your head up and not looking down or hunching forward. The reason for hunching down may be looking at the entertainment system of the machine as new and premium models come with LCD screens to make your exercises more interesting. This can again affect your posture or you can strain your neck and back. The best way is to look straight with your head up.

You should try and walk in proper stride and not over stride with extra long steps. For an efficient overall workout, technique is important as with any other exercise.

You should know your treadmill well enough to adjust your workouts, including the safety features. There are features in almost all treadmills to adjust your workouts according to your needs. For example - some equipment like life fitness treadmills offer a decline feature which is not usually present in treadmills. You should know how to make the best use of your machine. There are preset programs, speed and incline adjustments, heart rate monitors which you can make use of.

Make your exercises safe and effective. This will keep you motivated to stick to your regime for years to come.
